Cincu

Romania / Brasov / Cincu /

Cincu, formerly Șinca Mare, Șincul Mare, Cincul, Cincul-mare (in the Saxon dialect Gris-Schink, in German Groß-Schenk, Großschenk, Grossschenk, in Hungarian Nagysink) is the village of residence of the commune of the same name in Brașov County, Transylvania, Romania.
The settlement was founded by Saxon settlers in the middle of the 12th century, on a plateau located between the Olt and Hârtibaciu rivers. It soon became the center of Schenk, first mentioned in a 1329 document.

The church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in the 13th century, with a central tower to the west, is the largest Romanesque basilica in a Saxon village and unique in terms of its planimetric position: it is located on a hill that descends steep on three sides, so that it was to be defended only on the west side.

The fortification of the church took place between 1522-1526, as evidenced by the inscriptions in the choir and the nave, but also underwent changes after the Turkish danger passed and after the fire of 1789.
