Bulgarian revolutionary recognised as a national hero in Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia.
Near Rozhen monastery lies the grave of Yane Sandanski, one of the most famous and beloved fighters for the liberation of Macedonia, praised in many songs, the hero of dozens of stories that people continue to tell to this day. Yane Sandanski was killed on April 21, 1915 in Pirin Mountain in strife with another revolutionary group. He was buried 200 meters from Rozhen Monastery and his tombstone inscription reads: “To live is to fight. The slave - for freedom, the free man - for excellence”.
