Located in northeastern Lithuania, covers area of 1080 km². Divided into 6 eldership. Administrative centre is Kupškis, another city is Subačius.
The longest rivers are Pyvesa, Lėvuo, Šetekšna. Kupiškis reservoir is one of the largest in country. Eastern art of district is forested, the biggest forest are Šimonys and Skapiškis-Notigalė forests. Agriculture dominates in municipality.
