Located in northern Lithuania, borders with Latvia, covers area of 844 km². Divided into 6 elderships. Administrative centre - Naujoji Akmenė, smaller cities are Venta, Akmenė.
River Venta with its affluents Virvytė, Dabikinė, Vadakstis (Latvian: Vadakste). Part of territory is preserved by Kamanos state reserve and Venta regional park. Known as the Jurassic Park of Lithuania due to well preserved geological monuments and fossils. The biggest limestone quarry of Karpėnai lies close to Naujoji Akmenė. In Kairiškiai the first Lithuanian hydroelectricity plant was built. After 1999 Akmenė became the least district municipality of Lithuania.
