Estate home designed c. 1902 in the Georgian Revival style by James Brite (of the firm of Brite & Bacon) on originally 116 acres of land for Herbert Lee Pratt, Sr {industrialist, financier}. Pratt served as president of Standard Oil Co. and Charles Pratt & Co. and director of American Can Co. and Bankers Trust Co. He also served as a trustee of Amherst College, Pratt Institute, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The main house was built by Chas. T. Willis. Arden Studios performed decoration services.

James Leal Greenleaf designed two long pergolas, a formal rose garden, and terraces in collaboration with Ellen Biddle Shipman. Those gardens were later altered by Isabella Pendleton who added an iris garden. Since 1945, the estate has been adaptively reused as the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture.

The interior was used as a filming location for S3E7 of "Royal Pains" as Hank treats an injured violinist.
