Following a 1999 announcement, construction of the 1 million sq. ft. paint shop commenced in 2000 as part of a $1.2 billion renovation of the Pilette Road Truck Assembly Plant to produce the new Dodge M80 pickup in 2003 when large van production was scheduled to cease. The new assembly plant was to be built as a joint venture with suppliers on the flexible manufacturing model and manufacture 300,000 compact pickups a year.

A downturn in economic conditions and a lack of government support resulted in the cessation of constuction in 2000 with only the superstructure and outer covering completed. Shortly after negotiating a new contract with the CAW, Daimler-Chrysler cancelled the assembly plant in May 2003. Officials cited the lack of a business case to justify the increase in production capacity.

The M80 was redirected to the Warren Truck Plant and the paint shop superstructure was demolished in 2006.

Was used as propaganda to give hope to the employees at the Truck plant on Pilette road. There was no floor, only dirt and was never used.
