Opened in 1928 after acquiring lands from the Walker Farm holdings of Hiram Walker's and officially known as Walker Airport, it was expanded in 1940 and the name changed to Windsor Airport. During WWII it was the home of the No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School, part of the Commonwealth Air Training program. More than 1,600 Royal Air Force pilots were taught to fly at the School. After the war a new terminal was built and the airport expanded to serve jet aircraft.
At the present time the airport (designated YQG) offers all year round scheduled airline and charter flights, general aviation, cargo distribution and logistics. It services between 125,000 and 150,000 passengers each year. Air Canada offers 8 flights a day to Toronto and Sunwing Airlines offers charters to Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
The airport is a Category 5 airport featuring a 9,000 ft. x 200 ft. instrument approach runway and a 5,150 ft. x 150 ft. crosswind runway. At an elevation of 622 ft. and a southern location, it has the most "dry pavement days " of any airport in Ontario.
