Estate home designed c. 1895 in the Neo-Colonial style by C.P.H. Gilbert on originally 4 acres of land for Harvey Murdock {capitalist}. Murdock was a real estate developer and builder. It was subsequently owned by Samuel Dwight Brewster {merchant}. Brewster served as a partner in the dry goods firm of Deering, Milliken & Co.
The home's architect, Gilbert later designed "Winfield Hall" nearby. In 1915, Howard Major performed alterations to the main house which was subsequently owned by Warren D. Brewster who continued to call it "The Birches".
