Hughes is a city located on a 500-foot bluff on the east bank of the Koyukuk River in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska. The population was 83 as of 2009.
Originally the location of a trading point between ancient native groups, during the gold rush it served as a riverboat landing and supply port for the Indian River gold fields until 1915, when the local mining industry declined.
Following the gold rush, the native population remained, incorporating as a city in 1973. A post office was established in 1942. An airstrip was built in the 1950s, a school in 1956, and a clinic in 1968.
