"Winfield Hall" (Glen Cove, New York)

USA / New York / Glen Cove / Glen Cove, New York / Crescent Beach Road, 77
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, interesting place, Italianate style (architecture), movie / film / TV location, historic remains

"Winfield Hall" was built for Frank Winfield Woolworth of five and dime fame, in Glen Cove, NY. One of the last grand houses from the Gold Coast era. An imposing three-story 56 room Italian renaissance palace of white marble. Architect C.P.H. Gilbert designed in 1916. The interiors were designed by Theo. Hofstatter & Co. with woodwork by Irving & Casson - A.H. Davenport & Co.

Its grand staircase costing $2 million with pink and beige marble everywhere. 18th century Grinling Gibbons-like carvings in the Georgian dining salon. The most important space in the house is the music room with a built-in Aeolian organ. Unique are the 2nd floor bedrooms each equivalent to great museums' period rooms. With close attention to detail each room reflects its style or period such as Empire for Woolworths own bedroom. Other rooms could be Chinese, French Gothic, Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, etc.

"Winfield Hall" was used as a backdrop for the remake of Joan Crawford's classic "Mildred Pierce" starring Kate Winslet. HBO aired a mini-series in February of 2011. The interior was also used as a filming location for S3E8 of "Royal Pains" when Hank treats Boris' poisoning. While the exterior had a flyover of "Oheka Castle" which is a recurring location, the supposed bedroom was this estate's ballroom.

  • And what will now be written of Winfield Hall, will it fall, as have so many wonderful Long Island mansions? Will someone have the vision and to a greater degree the love to come to the rescue of this marble palace. I have seen more than my share of these great relics of a ones great chapter of American history torn apart. It pains me to think that I may see Winfield Hall no more. It seems that every year we lose one more of these sentinels of our past. We need more people like Garry Milieus who have the vision and foresight to come to it's aid.
