"Castra ad Montanesium" Ancient Fortress (Montana)

Bulgaria / Montana / Montana
ruined castle, Roman Empire, cultural heritage / national heritage, interesting place, ancient ruins

Montanensium (originally Castea ad Montanensium, later Civitas Montanensium) was an ancient Roman Camp Fortress on the edge of the modern Bulgarian city, that derives its name Montana from it. The town was given municipal rights in AD 161. Ancient remains include a marble-clad temple, with statues and shrines of Diana, Apollo, Mercury, Hercules, and Bacchus. Many of the remains are now in the city museum. Montanensium declined after the raids of the Huns, but was restored by Justinian in the 6th century. It declined again after Avar and Slav raids and settlement. In the Middle Ages, the fortified settlement came to be known under the Slavic name Kutlovitsa. It was conquered and destroyed by the Ottomans in the late 14th century.
