Near, or around, two sites where Korean forces captured American vessels. About one mile east is the museum and ship of the USS Pueblo. Four miles west, on Turu Islet, is where in 1866 Koreans burned the USS General Sherman. There is a museum on Ssuk that commemorates both of these incidents. In an unofficial state visit in October 2002, a South Korean delegation ended their tour here. Ssuk Islet has experienced significant damage due to the Taedong River flooding in August 2007.
