This is the largest section of the main British defensive fieldworks remaining at Yorktown.

Although the NPS will not mention it, the good condition of the works are directly due to their improvement by Confederate troops during the American Civil War, when Yorktown served as a key part of the Confederate defensive line during the opening phases of the Peninsula Campaign.
