Bella Vista is a Philadelphia neighborhood that is located within walking distance of Center City Philadelphia and so, in recent years, has become a very attractive location for younger, urban settlers looking to escape the high cost of Society Hill and Washington Square West. It is generally seen to have its boundaries at 11th St. in the West, South St. in the North, 6th St. in the East, and Washington Ave. in the South.
While now considered a neighborhood of its own, it was originally the NW section of a very large neighborhood called "Southwark" and/or "Pennsport". In the 1970's a decision was made to give the northern sections of this neighborhood their own "identities". From this, the neighborhoods of Bella Vista (in the NW) and Queen Village (in the NE) were created.
