The Jefferson Davis Monument, by sculptor Edward Virginius Valentine, was dedicated on February 22, 1911 at the intersection of Canal Street and Jefferson Davis Parkway. Popularly known as the Jeff Davis Monument, the 6-foot, 4-inch full-length bronze portrait of Jefferson Davis, the former Presidency of the Confederacy from 1861-1865, sits atop a 10-foot granite base. Three books rest on the rear of the base, which features a bas-relief design of palms and circular bronze medallion which reads: "The Confederate States of America 22 February 1862/DEO VINDICE."
