(former location of Freidenkers Cenotaph)
Park, with bandstand in center, popular for 4th of July celebrations, also former location of famous, controversial cenotaph monument (1998-2000) to early settlers of Comfort. The 32-ton quarried limestone rock commemorated "Freidenker" immigrants from Germany. When members of the community worried that it was a "monument to atheism", it was removed.

  • Some Comfort residents worried that their town would become "a Mecca for Atheists". It's a very funny concept because the last thing an atheist would want is a "Mecca". Still, I think they may have missed an opportunity! Maybe they could still make it a tourist attraction for novelty-seeking vacationers, even including atheists, "freethinkers" and others... if they had a sense of humor that is. In 1999, in response to the overblown controversy, a bunch of atheists DID spend their tourist dollars here. See "The Great Atheist Invasion" http://ffrf.org/fttoday/1999/April99/fahringer.html
