Fazilnagar, also known as Pawanagar, is the place where Lord Mahavir attained nirvana. It is also believed that Lord Buddha, while going to Kushinagar from Vaishali, stopped here to accept meals from one of his disciples.

According to Pali Tripitak, Pawa was the second capital of the Mallas. The temple situated here houses a magnificent Manasthamba. There are also 4 beautiful carved idols.

A festival is organized on the next day of Diwali every year. Many pilgrims visit on Kartik Poornima to celebrate the nirvana mahotsav.

Fazilnagar is around 20 km east of Kushinagar on Kasya- Tamkuhi Highway. It is 55 km from Deoria and 71 km from Gorakhpur. Deoria Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
