castle ruins, Medieval / Middle Ages
The ruined site of the medieval fortress of Ephraim is located on the Sveta Marina summit northeast of the modern settlement of Efrem in southern Bulgaria. The fortress played a part in the rivalries between Bulgaria, the Latin Empire, and the Byzantine (Nicene) Empire in the 13th century. Just to the southeast of the fortress lies "Gluhite Kamani" ("The Deaf Stones"), a prehistoric sanctuary.
