The Alden Villa is one of the earliest if not the earliest homes designed almost entirely by Stanford White himself. The commission from Robert Percy Alden arrived in 1880 through McKim's connections.

In early 1879 the partnership of McKim, Mead & Bigelow began to design Fort Hill, a rambling villa on Lloyd Neck on the north shore of Long Island, for Percy's mother, Anna Coleman Alden. That project may have come to McKim through his New York City landlord, who was Mrs. Alden's son-in-law. The Coleman-Alden family may have preferred New York City, but their money came from iron mines in central Pennsylvania.

Following his marriage, Percy Alden decided to build a new family seat complete with manor house, barns, and superintendent's cottage on a plateau in Cornwall, just within view of his profitable smokestacks.
