The site of Nonsuch Palace, begun by Henry VIII in 1538 and left incomplete at his death in 1547. It was completed by the Earl of Arundel, who had purchased it from Mary I in 1556. After returning to the Crown, the palace was given by Charles II to his mistress Barbara, Countess of Castlemaine, who demolished it and sold off the building materials to cover her gambling debts in c.1682-1683.
