The Westin Book-Cadillac Hotel is located in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. The 31-floor building, designed by Louis Kamper, has a height of 349 ft (106 m). It was the tallest building in Detroit from 1924-1926. It is a contributing property in the Washington Boulevard Historic District.

The hotel was constructed from 1923 to 1924 at a cost of $14,000,000. Originally named the Book-Cadillac Hotel, it originally contained 1,136 guest rooms. In 1951, it was renamed the Sheraton-Cadillac and all of the public spaces (except for the ballrooms and Italian Garden) were redone and escalators replaced the Grand Staircase. In 1975, with business declining, the hotel was renamed the Detroit-Cadillac. The hotel was modernized and renamed the Radisson Cadillac in 1976, and by 1979, it was renamed back to the Book-Cadillac. In 1984, the Book-Cadillac closed its doors for a renovation (the mixed-use "Book-Cadillac Plaza") but it never panned out and soon became vacant, the arcade shops closing in 1986.

After nearly two decades of serious neglect and vandalism, from 2006 to 2008, the Book-Cadillac underwent a $200,000,000 renovation and was renamed the Westin Book-Cadillac Detroit, reopening on October 25, 2008. The ballrooms and garden cafe have been restored to their 1920s glamour with 21st century amenities. A three level addition was built to the northeast of the building, containing a new 12,000 sq ft ballroom, a pool, a hot tub, a fitness centre, a spa, and conference space. The hotel also has three restaurants and a bar. 455 hotel rooms (including 53 suites) occupy floors 7-22, and 67 condominium units occupy floors 23-31.

  • Well, it sure warms my heart to finally see a piece of Detroit's history returning to its appearance. Did you know that they're renovating the Fort Shelby Hotel nearby, too?
  • YES!!! Renovations are complete! Now to just wait for the Fort Shelby Hotel...
  • I'm not a Detroit resident, but I'm glad to see they are giving some of these historic places a chance instead of demolishing them to build something ten times more expensive.
