Big Diomede Island (Russian: Ratmanov Island) is located in the Bering Strait 2.4 miles west of the United States' Little Diomede Island, across the International date line. The Island is the easternmost point in Russia.
The island had been inhabited by eskimos until it was first discovered in 1648 by Russian explorer Semyon Dezhnev. The native residents were removed from the island following WWII to eliminate any chance contact with United States resident natives on Little Diomede island during the cold war. It is currenlty uninhabited, but does contain some radio and weather instrumentation.
There is a Russian border outpost in the Northen part of the island.
