St. Lawrence Island has been inhabited intermittently for the past 2,000 years by Yup'ik Eskimos. In the 18th and 19th centuries, over 4,000 people inhabited the island in 35 villages. The island is 100 miles long by 20 miles wide, and located only 38 miles from Siberia, Russia.
St. Lawrence Island was used during the cold war by the U.S. Military for radar and communications stations at Northeast Cape and Savoonga.
Reindeer were introduced to the island in 1900, leading to a herd of 10,000 by 1940.
St. Lawrence Island is thought to be one of the last surviving non-submerged portions of the land bridge that once joined Asia with North America.
