The Diomide islands in the middle of the Bering Strait separate Russian and U. S. territory by only 2.4 miles. If the ice is solid, it is theoretically possible to walk or sled the distance, though this is obviously frowned upon by border agents.
West Island: Big Diomide (Russian Ratmanova; Eskimo name Imaklik) is Russia's most easterly territory.
East Island: Little Diomede (Russian Kruzenshterna; Eskimo name Ingalik) are United States territory.
