The Nicholas building was constructed in 1906 and was for a time reputed to be the tallest building in Ohio. Designed by architects Bacon & Huber in the style of the Chicago School, the 17 story skyscraper 224,850 sq. ft. building was named after Nicholas Spitzer.
Long known as the National Bank Building and then the Fifth Third Building after its major tenants, the property declined after the Third Fifth Bank relocated their offices to One Seagate. Purchased for $313,000 in 2008, the property was only 10 percent occupied in September 2009 when it closed. Currently offered for sale, past proposals for the future use of the property include a mix of retail, office and residential uses.
