Melnik Fortress is located above the town of Melnik, about 1 km north-east of the town center. It is believed that the fortress was built in XI century, but in XIII century, during the reign of Despot Alexius Slav it has been expanded and additionally strengthened (hence derives its name - the fortress of Despot Slav). The role of the fortress was to defend the region and it was the residence of rulers of Alexius Slav and Dragota.
