The medieval Skaphida Fortress was located on a small cape jutting out of the Karaburun peninsula. The fortress was rectangular, with quadrangular towers in the corners, and a moat protecting the walls from access by land. The damming of the Mandra Lake has resulted in the flooding of most of the fortress at most times. Skaphida is mentioned several times in late medieval chronicles, as it changed hands repeatedly in the 13th and 14th centuries.
