In the early 1900s it was the site of a shale mine, from which oil was extracted and many petroleum products were manufactured.
It ceased operations in about 1930. The railway line, which met other railways at Newnes Junction, was torn up in WWII for use as tank barriers in the UK (and other things).
Some of the land is still privately owned, but most has been taken over as part of surrounding National Parks. Ruins of the old industrial site and railway platorm can be seen.
Car camping available in National Park (no pets allowed) and on some private land (pets allowed).
The former pub often opens weekends but only as a snack bar and to buy information maps.
Can walk to the glow worm tunnel from Newnes; the tunnel was dug to push the railway line to Newnes.
Roos, wombats and an occasional goanna wander.
Access by dirt road only; suitable for most 2WDs; no water, no power, few phones (but none public), pit toilets.
