Baal Bone is owned by Xstrata Coal and ceased operations in 2011 with the final mining of longwall 31. It was developed as an underground mine in 1982/83 and before that it was oeprated by the Australian Government as an open cut mine from 1940-1952. Up till September 2012 the mine was used as a training center where employees complete classroom courses and get hands on experience operating equipment underground before moving on to Xstrata operations. Trainees did a 12 week course and during 2012 270 employees completed it. However, by the end of 2012 with the coal industry downturn Xstrata suspended training and the mine is on care and maintenance for the training facilities.
