The ruined Thracian, Roman, and Medieval fortress of Ranoule (Ranoulē) is located at the site known as Valchanovo Kale (Vălčanovo Kale) on a hill 156 m above sea level, some 5 km northwest of Primorsko. The fortress lay on the ancient coastal road near a ford across the Ropotamo River. The original fortress was pre-Roman, as it was constructed of stones without mortar. The site was a significant settlement in the Middle Ages.
