Moti Lai Nehlu Medical College took its birth on 5th May, 1961 when It was formally Inaugurated by Dr.Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. Shri Chandra Bhan Gupta,the then Chief Minister of U.P.,took the initiative for its inception. It was named after Pt.Moti Lai Nehru to honour his great efforts way back in 1904 to get a medical college established at Allahabad. Initially the premises of the British District Jail at South Malaka were acquired for the college.
Pt. Moti Lai Nehru was kept imprisoned here in 1930 during British rule for his leading role in the freedom movement This jail is also well known in history for Shaheed Roshan Singh who was sentenced to death here only in the famous Kakori Case. Later, in 1963, the Government House or Laat Sahib ki Kothi, was acquired for the college. It used to be residence of the Governor of United Province in British era (Uttar Pradesh of today, Allahabad then being the state capital). The jail premises were transformed into Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital of today (named after Pt. Moti Lai Nehru's wife).Prof. Preetam Das, the founder principal of the college at the age of 43, was India's first to hold this post so young.Till date the college has produced nearly 4000 undergraduate and 2000 post graduate students.
