  • The masterplan and concept design for Heritage Park was designed in 1992 by 1Lt Michael D. Huffstetler of the 343rd Civil Engineering Squadron. Asked by his Squadron Commander, Lt Col Jim Murray, to design a layout of a permanent site near the main gate for two historic aircraft, an OA-10 and an F4 that had been parked on an apron for years, Lt Huffstetler took it one step further: He developed a comprehensive, long-term masterplan and design concept for a static display park (to be called Heritage Park) that would allow for future expansion and assist Eielson AFB in attracting additional display aircraft that have contributed to the history of the base, further celebrating the aviation mission and educating families and visitors on base history. Along with a detailed masteplan, Lt Huffstetler also constructed a scale model of the future development. On behalf of the 343rd Civil Engineering Squadron, Lt Huffstetler submitted the design for an Air Force Design Award and in February 1993, the project was awarded a Merit Award - Concept Design Category by the USAF Civil Engineer at the time, BG James E. McCarthy. For several years, the model of Heritage Park remained a permanent fixture within the Base Commander's private office, and helped guide subsequent MWR projects at the park.
