The 1,157,000 acres of Becharof National Wildlife Refuge was established to conserve brown bears, salmon, migratory birds, caribou, marine birds, and mammals; to fulfill treaty obligations; to provide for continued subsistence uses; and to ensure necessary water quality and quantity.
The Refuge includes Mt. Peulik, a 4,800 ft volcano with lava flows reaching to Becharof Lake, the second-largest lake in Alaska.
