The smaller of the twin Ugashik Lakes, Lower Ugashik lies directly at the headwaters of the Ugashik River, the location of a salmon counting tower ("wier") operated by the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game.
The Ugashik Lakes provide essential habitat for massive runs of sockeye (red) salmon and is a critical link in the Bristol Bay sockeye salmon fishery, the world's largest.
