The former Bayside shopping mall was built in the mid-1980s as an add-on to the Hudson Bay Company store that used to be located to the south. Originally occupied by several high-end local retailers, it started to empty out when The Bay relocated to Midtown Plaza. After being used by the Heinze Institute of Technology for a time, it was then home to the Ashley and Konto Furniture stores, which closed in September 2007. The space is now being used by certain staff from Cameco, whose headquarters on 11th Street West became overcrowded.

Before the Bayside, the site was home to a Safeway grocery store built in 1951. It closed on Dec. 29, 1984 and was demolished soon after.
