SS Algol (AKR-287) & SS Capella (AKR-293) (San Francisco, California)

USA / California / Brisbane / San Francisco, California
military, ship, auxiliary, United States Navy

These two Algol Class Fast Sealift ships are two of the eight currently under the control of the Maritime Administration and kept in a 5-day readiness status for deployment.

These two former Sea-Land Line Containerships are some of the fastest cargo ships in the world, with top speeds of over 33 knots. The SS Algol is credited with very nearly besting the famed SS United States for the Trans-Atlantic Blue Riband for a August 1973 crossing in which she averaged 34.93 knots, only 1 knot slower than the United States' top speed crossing. Upon their activation from the Ready Reserve Force, both report to the Military Sealift Command's Pacific Fleet.
