The Strand Theatre opened in 1928, and became notorious in 1977 for being the only place in San Diego to show screenings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". In the 1990's, it closed down as a theatre, and remained derelict for a few years until it was later remodeled and opened as "Wings" in 2003, an east coast chain selling Beach apparel. Attempts to preserve the building as a theatre failed, thus the store has remained in place. The theater was designated a historic building by the San Diego Historical Resources Board in December 2003.
