La Jolla is a neighborhood within the City of San Diego.
La Jolla is actually broken up by several sub-districts with distinct characteristics...sixteen to be exact. Here is a brief description of just a few:
- La Jolla Farms over looks Blacks Beach and is characterized by huge mansions.
- UCSD is the college campus area which includes the Birch Aquarium and Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
- La Jolla Shores is very residential and is home to the La Jolla Shores beach which stretches from Blacks Beach to the peninsula - this area also has small restaurants and shops.
- The Village is what most people think of when they think of La Jolla. It has the ritziest restaurants and hotels, and has the most tourists of all the LJ districts (they're easy to spot too, they're the ones driving the expensive cars and dressed to the nines). The Village is also home to the Cove, where long distance swimmers swim year round and the local turf of the La Jolla Cove Swim Club. The La Jolla Cove Swim Club boasts many notable members who have broken swimming records and accomplished multiple feats (e.g. channel crossings, etc.).
- The Beach-Barber Tract is home to really quaint houses. This district is also home to famous Windansea Beach and numerous reef breaks. Lower Hermosa in just south of Beach Barber, and is characterized by bigger houses.
- Bird Rock is a family-oriented neighborhood with great beach bungalow type houses.
