In 1960, to eliminate the foul odor that comes off the Wolf River, which was pervasive in downtown Memphis, the Army Corps of Engineers built this section of land to dam the Wolf River and divert it directly into the Mississippi River, forming the north side of Mud Island and the slackwater harbor now known as Wolf River Harbor.
