The Kiowa called these the Wichita Mountains because the Wichita tribe had a settlement in this area. Artist George Catlin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Catlin) featured this area in his painting "Wichita Village in Oklahoma, at the base of the Wichita Mountains."
