Founded in 1851 by the Franciscan Jesuit fathers as the first Catholic cemetery of Santa Clara Valley, many prominent pioneers and early settlers are buried here. Notable burials here include Father Bernard Hubbard (1888–1962), the famous geologist and Jesuit priest, best known as the "Glacier Priest", Father James Chrysostom Bouchard (1823-1889), also a Jesuit priest and missionary, as well as Tiburcio Vasquez (1835-1875), the notorious Mexican bandito.
