In 1966, during the glory days of bad redevelopment, the city of Santa Clara decided to replace its Downtown with a mall. The mall would be done in the popular mission style, to fit with the "theme" of Santa Clara. 8 blocks of historic buildings along Franklin Street, the heart of Santa Clara, were leveled. In its place the city began to build the Franklin Mall. But the Franklin Mall was never completed, only two blocks of the old Downtown were redeveloped. The other 6 blocks remained a large dirt lot for years after. Eventually condominiums and parking lots replaced the rest.
