Waste Coal Fluidized Bed Generating Station -
New Replacement Plant (Opened 2004)

Plant that produces electricity from low-grade "waste" coal left behind in large heaps by past mining operations. The plant opened in 2004 as the largest waste coal power station in the world, with an electricity output of 521 megawatts or roughly 5 times that of the next largest waste coal plant. Reliant Energy is the owner and operator.

The plant was named the 2004 Plant of the Year by Platt’s POWER magazine. In addition, Seward Station received The Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. Seward was constructed on the site of an 82-year-old, coal-fired power plant that was retired at the end of 2003. The new facility, which began commercial operation in late 2004, produces two and one-half times as much electricity as the plant it replaces, while significantly lowering emissions rates.
