Indiana County was created on March 30, 1803, from parts of Westmoreland and Clearfield Counties, and is probably named for the Indiana Territory. Its county seat is Indiana. In 2010, Indiana County's population was 88,880.

It contains 596,600 acres, and is well watered by many streams. The timber in the east part of the county is white pine, hemlock and spruce pine. In the western part, it is white oak, black oak, red oak, chestnut oak, hickory, poplar, locust, chestnut, cucumber, cherry, walnut and sugar maple. The county proclaims itself the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World", shipping over one million trees annually.

In 2012, Indiana County will have an unusual distinction of being served by three different area codes. Currently served by area code 724 and area code 814, the pending split of 814 to form area code 582 will give Indiana County three area codes.

Its name memorializes the first inhabitants. County seat, Indiana, was laid out 1805 on land given by George Clymer, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
