"The Cedars" (demolished) (Sands Point, New York)

USA / New York / Port Washington / Sands Point, New York
residence, farmhouse, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, historical layer / disappeared object

Location of the former c. 1719 homestead of Tristam Dodge III, of the Dodge family. As the property changed hands, the home was gradually enlarged into a 20-room 6800sq ft mansion. The farmhouse style became more of a Newport Style Colonial, a cedar shingled three story gambrel roofed home with many porches. Attorney and US Representative W. Bourke Cockran purchased the home in the 1885. Addison Mizner designed formal gardens and an amphitheatre for the estate in 1911. The home was leased to Daniel Guggenheim for the season in 1916. After Cockran passed in 1923, oil speculator Joshua S. Cosden purchased the property. He sold the estate in 1926 to Vincent Astor, who owned Cloverley Manor to the north.

Headley Donovan, Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc. and a senior advisor to president Jimmy Carter, owned the mansion from the 1960's until his passing in 1990. The mansion was razed and rebuilt in the mid 2000's.
