Benedictine Abbey of Argentan

France / Basse-Normandie / Argentan /
church, monastery, Order of Saint Benedict, catholicism

The abbey was founded the late sixth century. Destroyed by the Normans around 1060 later restored the monastery adopted the Rule of St Benedict. The monastery, forced to close and dispersed during the Revolution, regrouped again in 1822 at Vimoutiers, then Argentan in 1830. Battle of Normandy destroyed it again in 1944, forcing the community to retreat to Sees. In 1958, the monastery was rebuilt in Argentan on the edge of the city and again recommenced the Benedictine monastic life. In the nave of the abbey church, we can see a Virgin and Child from the XIV century and in the crypt an important relic of St Opportune (Abesses of the VIII cent.). Households praying for a child, come to seek the intercession of the Blessed.
Spirituality: Contemplative Catholic, the nuns of Argentan (fifty) sing daily Mass and the Divine Office and work and other activities to seek God.
