Formerly a city of about 4,000 that was incorporated into Freeport in 1957. Founded in 1831, it was used as an entry port for Anglo settlers moving into Texas. It briefly served as the national capital of Texas in 1836. The Battle of the Brazos River between Texas and Mexican naval forces occurred here in April 1837.
