This is a statue of a duck named Gertie who delighted the nation for a few months in the waning days of World War II. Gertie had a nest on some pilings on the Milwaukee river, and newspapers nationwide followed the progress of the duck and her offspring. It was 1944 and clearly the nation was starved for some non-war news.
