Established two years prior to Florida's statehood, Jean Street Shipyard has not only witnessed history, but has played a part in it. The shipyard was the site of one of Tampa's two major Civil War battles, the Hillsborough River Raid. Here, Union forces ambushed, burned, and sank two Confederate blockade-runners which they knew were being serviced at the shipyard. Some of the ships' crews escaped and made their way to town to alert the townspeople of the attacks. This led the Union commander to order an expeditious withdrawal, and spared the shipyard from being completely destroyed. After marching south to Ballast Point, the Union forces were met by a regiment of Confederate soldiers that happened to be in town and had been told of the Union raid. This, then led to Tampa's other major Civil War combat event, the Battle of Ballast Point, in which both sides incurred heavy losses.
