Jacksonville is a US city on the Atlantic coast of northern Florida, and is the seat of Duval County. In 1968, the city and county governments were consolidated and Jacksonville's city limits expanded to include nearly the entire county, an area of 885 square miles (2,265 square km - roughly 13x the area of the District of Columbia). This expansion gave Jacksonville the largest land area of any city in the 48 contiguous states.

The increase in land area was met with a corresponding increase in the city's population.
In 2010, Jacksonville had an estimated population of 813,518 , making it the most populous city proper in Florida, the third most populous Atlantic coastal city, and number 13 among all US city populations. In stark contrast is Jacksonville's population density, which was ranked lowest among Florida cities of 50,000+ residents in 2000.

Jacksonville's greater metro-area population was estimated at 1,525,228 in 2010, ranking it 4th in Florida, after the respective MSAs for Miami, Tampa, and Orlando, and 40th overall among US metropolitan areas.

Jacksonville is located in northeast Florida's First Coast region, situated on the banks of the St. Johns River, which flows north and empties into the Atlantic Ocean about 20 miles east of downtown. Jacksonville is known for its active shipping port as well as being headquarters for two major freight railroads.

The settlement that became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 as Cowford due to its location at a narrow point in the river where cattle were once driven across. The city was renamed in 1822 for Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and eventual seventh President of the United States.

  • One of the Nicest cities in Florida. None of that annoyingly excessive glitz and glamour that adourn Florida's other cities. Basically a very modest city for its size.
  • One of these days, I will get out of this Hoosier doghouse (Indiana) and return to Jacksonville. I like it that much. Especially the Beaches Area. The best thing is that the area is ENTIRELY on ONE time, not two or three.
  • I wonder why Jacksonville has such a small Downtown. It only sligtly bigger than downtown Evansville, Indiana. Jacksonville is nearly eight times the size of Evansville.
  • These parameters are incorrect. Jacksonville, Florida consists of Nassau, Duval, Clay, and St. Johns Counties. I request the correction to this, please?
  • Jacksonville metro consists of these counties but Jacksonville is only part of Duval County
  • Duval county "is" Jacksonville's city limit's.
  • Why they make the county and the city remain as basically the same entity is beyond me, wouldn't that cause city planning issues later on?
  • i live here in jacksonville, big city, large population. i wounder why Nassau, Clay, and St. Johns County was'nt apart of duval county. jacksonville has the 6th largest land area behind all cities in alaska
